HackerNoon: Please tell us briefly about your background. Hello! My name is Asaf Nevo, I’m the CEO and one of three co-founders at Pico - Get Personal. Native to the city of Haifa, father of two, with the belief that there is no such thing as an unsolved problem. It’s safe to say I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and now background. From my required military service to my studies at University to now my tech-business venture, and even the treehouse I built for my kids, I’ve always tried to find ways to innovate general, day-to-day situations and circumstances. What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? Our startup is Pico - Get Personal, and we are a data-driven marketing platform. We help sports teams, brands, and any organization that has a digital following capture and own first-party data on their audience so that they can market to them accordingly. Our digital activations, which consist of games like Memory Match, Spin the Wheel, Trivia, Find the Difference, and more, help our clients turn digital engagement into valuable first-party data, thus creating the opportunity for highly targeted and personalized marketing campaigns that drive an added layer of fan interest and conversions. What is the origin story? The OG version of Pico initially started as Pico.buzz. It was a photo-sharing platform that stemmed after my wedding when I, and one of Pico’s co-founders, Roi Mozer, saw hundreds of people taking pictures but not having a way of sharing them in one place. Mind you, this was in 2014, before Instagram, Snapchat, etc. The idea was to create a way for people and brands to have one designated place to share photos quickly and easily. In 2016, we pivoted to where we are now, a data-driven fan marketing platform, as we saw a real need for sports teams to know and understand who their digital fans are. Who are the fans constantly engaging with their content? Who is behind the daily likes, comments, and shares? We’re solving a specific problem that most teams and organizations aren’t even aware of- that over 90% of their following is actually anonymous. In this day in age, sports teams and brands have millions of followers across their social pages that they’re engaging with daily. They’re anonymous to the organization because the social networks own the data and monetize it for themselves and aren’t the most eager to share much. So what Pico enables, through fun interactive experiences that run natively on an organization's digital channels, is the ability to identify who those fans are organically and pick up more information and data throughout each activation and conversation. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? I love the people of Pico. At the end of the day, we all work hard to create value, and I’m fortunate enough to have driven people surrounding me all day. We’re the ones to solve the problem because we’re all bringing with us experience in the digital and sports space, as well as a true passion for what we’re doing. We follow sports religiously, we stay in the know when it comes to tech in the digital and marketing space, and our solution has already been proven beyond valuable to our clients. It has directly impacted their marketing approach and overall strategy. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? If we weren’t building Pico, I would like to help small to medium-sized business owners. A majority of businesses worldwide are of the small to medium size and often need guidance in what next step they should take. I want to help them when they’re at that point- they’ve built a successful and proven business, but they’ve reached a limit, a glass ceiling, and they aren’t sure what else they could be doing to grow or where they should begin focusing their efforts. They’re making money but not enough yet to feel comfortable. It’s my dream to build a fund that would allow me to be an angel investor and help them grow and truly enjoy the fruits of their labor. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? We measure success directly through the value that we provide to our customers. How many new profiles were they able to add to their internal CRM and database? What marketing goals were they able to achieve through our technology? Were tickets, memberships, or newsletter signups created from our insights? In this case, we let the numbers speak for themselves, with Click-Through Rates 4x higher than the industry average following Conversion Rates that are 2.5x higher than the industry average. 60 Stories To Learn About Customer Engagement

We have all been watching Mr.Robot recently and dreaming of becoming some b4da55 133t hacker who can conquer the world with just the terminal and a few lines of code. But…soon you realize you are a Frontend dev… and you spend most of your time dwelling in masses of HTML, CSS and the most hipster new framework. This is not going to help you much with achieving your dream😢. Or will it? For some time now (around a year) I have been dedicating myself solely to web developing. Coming from a design background I found myself most comfortable on the visual side of things, and although I occasionally dive into the backend, for the most part I spend my time on the front of projects. I’ve always been extremely curious, and since little always felt attracted towards the field of Security. Trying to break or access into something I wasn’t supposed to, always sounded like a lot of fun to me 😁. So recently, (and appropriately matching the release of the new Mr Robot season 🙄) I embarked myself in the journey of teaching myself Cyber Security. After reading quite a bit on the topic and devouring article after article I arrived to a conclusion… to be somewhat capable in Computer Security you have to be proficient, in MANY fields: Networking, forensics, reverse engineering… not speaking about the foundations of Computer Science themselves. If you want to exploit a system, you must first know how it works, and…I didn’t. Until a few weeks ago. Meet Pico CTF! Looking for ways to practice what I was learning I came across PICO, and here is where things get very exciting… 🚩 What is a CTF? As some my already know CTF stands for: Capture The Flag. Its a kind of competition where a test environment has been set up so that hackers can play around. Usually its a set of challenges, materialized in any shape of form: a vulnerable website, a vulnerable machine, a set of web challenges etc… that the hacker has to solve in order to get the flag. And how does a flag look you may ask? Like this: Flag(this_is_a_flag_so_1337) It can be of any form, but in the case of PICO for example its just a string of text you have to discover and then input on the site for validation Pico CTF dashboard. If the flag you found (or you think you found) is correct, ecstasy invades your body. If not, back to frustration land. 🤔 Why PICO? There are a TON of CTFs out there: _awesome-ctf — A curated list of CTF frameworks, libraries, resources and softwares_github.com apsdehal/awesome-ctf So being a complete newb and not knowing where to start, I started reading. Everyone seemed to recommend PICO, but I wasn’t sold so fast at the start, this is how my mind looked more or less: It is aimed towards Highschool kids and Im a pro 1337 web developer, it sure can’t be that challenging… i…it..ca..can’t right? 😬 💥 Reality So after solving the first few challenges with relative ease, things started to get complicated. I soon got stuck in some challenge, tried to pass into a different one, same result, then it is when reality kicked in. The challenges are perfectly designed in an increasing exponential difficulty basis. And they soon get DIFFICULT. So far I have gotten to mid level 2 in a good bunch ofweeks working in my spare nights. And it looks like its going to be a looong journey. Cool thing is that I’m learning A LOT. From working with binaries or hex, to network protocol analysis passing through encryption algorithms and many more things. The way PICO sets its challenges follows this recipe: Hey! We found this stuff where we suspect the flag is. Find it. Good luck 😉🖕 *Pssht: You may find this useful <study/reference material> **Pssht: Maybe it has something to do with? <tip to point your research> And that’s it. It literally throws you into the blue. I found that this way you really take the time to build a mental process and start to build up your research little by little. Instead of directly diving in like I’m used to to on my web development stuff. Once you are sure what you are working with, it comes the solving part, which usually requires you to implement some custom piece of software. 📡 The challenge I plan to finish PICO CTF and I realized my experience might be useful to other people like me, those who are interested in Security but don’t know where to start. Its pretty common to feel like this these days. It has literally been ages since I felt so challenged by a problem, or that I had to literally abandon something to pursue it in another time because I reached a total roadblock. Which has the side effect of once you solve a problem. Its so rewarding when you see that little green message, that its starting to get addicting. EXTREME SATISFACTION That feel when you convert binary to decimal using an online converter. I have imposed to myself the following constrains: 1. I will build everything custom in Python My main language is Javascript ❤️, and that’s what I have been using for the past year in Front and Back. I always felt attracted by Python so I have decided to use it to solve any of the problems in PICO and in learn it along the way. The main reasons for this decision are: I’m very interested in Machine Learning and Data stuff, would love to do some projects in the future. There is A LOT of instructional material out there referencing the use of Python, apparently its one of the most widely used languages used in ML so as a newbie I want to learn something widely supported. ☝Same thing happens with hacking stuff. A lot of hacking tooling is made in Python. So its a plus to be able to extend it/modify it. Completely personal preference, wanted to learn something different to what I use 8+ hours in my daily job, just for the shake of variety and cross pollination of knowledge. 2. I will read every “man page” of a new command PICO challenges tend to make you use a lot of new UNIX terminal commands. So in order to understand them better I read thoroughly the manual pages of any new command I have to use. 3. Use VIM This is a complete personal preference. I use Atom on my daily work, but always wanted to learn VIM. Its specially useful when you have to log into a machine using SSH. Which you will do a lot in PICO. Over the last few years, many big brands, including , lost a lot of money and broke their customers’ trust because their teams weren’t ready for Black Friday. Flowwow, global marketplace In this article, I am sharing five tips that will help prepare your service for massive scaling – and avoid mistakes, common for e-commerce platforms. Planning is the key Before any action, develop and implement a detailed scaling plan, divided into several stages: 1 month before a peak day, 2 weeks before a peak day, 3-4 days before a peak day, and 1 day before a peak day with a precise list of actions for the teams. At every stage, it’s important that designated specialists understand how to carry out each task and solve any potential issue. These teams usually consist of a DevOps team and backend developers. #1 Forecast the data Every year the total number of orders is increasing – it comes as no surprise, and that's why it’s vital to forecast the traffic volume and be ready for it. Historical data and cross-functional collaboration with the marketing team are core elements for an accurate prediction. They help to understand which of the system components can grow and then decide on the number of servers and their capacity. Once you have evaluated the expected numbers, put 2X into the forecast. If you predict 30X growth, then set the task to be ready for a 60X increase. This approach allows you extra preparation for unexpected challenges. If you have cloud scaling, you have the tools to dramatically increase the capacity in a short period of time and then reduce it to regular indicators when needed. Do an infrastructure discovery analysis, based on the basic parameters – map out servers, their current size, their components, projects, and applications. Understanding the basic parameters helps extrapolation: you are predicting growth and calculating potential scenarios in case it's indeed 60X. Apply rule 30X to all errors. If you find an error, ask yourself: “If this error starts appearing 30 times more often, will it be a problem for us?” If an error on the 30X traffic is worth being corrected now, start working on it. #2 Protect your scaling team from business requests When your development team is not big enough, the chances are high that everyone's to-do list is full to the brim. Hence, it is necessary to form a separate internal development team, whose focus will exclusively be on the peak period: this team should be free from other business requests and deal only with optimization tasks. The Pareto principle works well here: optimising 20% of the bottlenecks means closing 80% of performance problems in code and the database. Don’t forget to announce a feature freeze (a period when your team won’t add new features) and remind the team about it, preferably a month in advance. We don’t allow making changes to the code or database during this period because, when changes are made, the entire system may fall, and the cost of this error increases 30X at the time. #3 Find bottlenecks and start the optimization Bottlenecks show the mechanisms you need to optimise in your current infrastructure. We divide the current system components into different areas and monitor them separately. It allows us to evaluate the performance of each server and understand which components need more resources from our side – this approach helps to plan our resources flexibly. Use an advanced monitoring system, capable of assessing each component’s performance in real-time, and log aggregation to catch all errors (so you can fix them later). The Pareto principle works well here: optimising 20% of the bottlenecks means closing 80% of performance problems in code and the database. #4 Perform personalised stress testing Perform stress testing in advance, trying to mimic your potential customer behaviour. Start with simulating the infrastructure load, for example, 10X of the usual. Based on the data obtained, we understand, which areas require optimization. There are special tools that allow you to take an hour load and play it 10 times faster to assess and confirm whether the system can withstand a certain level of pressure. #5 Plan for Day X During peak loads, we meticulously schedule the workload of each team member, assigning key roles and distributing responsibilities. We do care about our employees, and that’s why we make sure everyone gets a healthy amount of sleep, however, we also strive to cover the maximum number of time zones. At each stage, we nominate a process manager, who monitors what is happening at the peak moment. It is this person who informs the team if one of the system components approaches the performance limit (80%). As we work remotely, when Day X comes, it is crucial that the whole team keeps in touch not only through work messengers like Slack, but also through emergency communication channels, such as Telegram and a personal phone. Peak Days like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Christmas are active phases that you should be ready for. More traffic means more value for your business. This, in turn, usually manifests into increased revenue. That’s why do not hesitate to invest in scaling, adhere to international principles and implement modern services.
