Next week, the US will hold a presidential election. At that time, we will vote not for a presidential candidate but for an impression of the candidate we see on TV and at campaign events, read about in newspapers and blogs, and hear about from our friends and family. Like Plato’s shadows on the cave wall, our impressions will reflect only whatever somebody chooses to show us. Modern politics overwhelms us with images crafted and cultivated to fit what we want to see rather than the truth. We latch onto the fragment of reality that we perceive. We never see the full picture. Outside of a few insiders, nobody has enough information to make an informed decision about anybody they vote for. I certainly don’t. Who’s good? Who’s bad? You may think the answers are obvious. Often, it’s not so easy to tell. The devil you don’t know or the other devil you don’t know For example, Congressman Tom Emmer, one of crypto’s most powerful advocates in Congress. He’s the guy who yelled at SEC Chairman Gary Gensler for missing the FTX fraud, among other grievances. Did you know FTX was one of the biggest donors to Tom Emmer’s campaign and gave almost $3 million to the GOP’s Congressional Leadership Fund while Emmer was in charge of it? Did you also know that Emmer was one of several Congresspeople who wrote a letter to Gensler asking him to stop investigating FTX (among other crypto entities)? If you support crypto and politicians, have you ever asked Emmer how he feels about protecting a scam? Taking money from a fraudster? Did he give the money back? Or, do you not care because Emmer says nice things about crypto and criticizes people you dislike? Because he shares your views? If you don’t support crypto and politicians, do you support Gensler’s nonsensical application of obsolete financial rules to stifle a new technology with arbitrary lawsuits and bizarre standards? Or, do you not care about people trying to build or use crypto, so you ignore it? Presidents don’t matter for your financial markets Why does market performance always seem disconnected from politics? The crypto market crashed more than 50% several times under Biden. It crashed more than 70% several times under Trump. Obama was even worse — multiple crashes of 80% or more. On the flip side, it went up 100% after Biden took office, 2,500% after Trump took office, and 5,500% after Obama took office. Seems fishy until you compare that with legacy assets. People make a big deal about the economy under one party or the other, but the economy — like crypto — seems to do whatever it wants regardless of who’s in office. Look at the stock market performance under Republicans and Democrats, adjusted for GDP. Red is Republican, blue is Democrat. Can you see any trend? Neither can I. You can extend this to the wider economy. Let’s do GDP. I counted the number of negative half-years in white: What about inflation? Same. What about employment? Same. What about budget deficits? For statistical consistency, we’ll calculate it as a percentage of GDP. Same. What about oil prices? Same. From a purely investing perspective, you get no advantage or disadvantage under Democrats and Republicans. On the whole, the US economy and its major assets perform as well or as poorly under one as the other. You can take these charts and move the boxes one or two years forward to account for the lag between a change of party and the results of their actions. You’ll get the same result. Know what matters Am I saying presidential elections don’t matter? No. They matter a lot. Every election carries high stakes for your business, employment opportunities, living standards, moral or religious beliefs, mental health, and many aspects of your life. But presidents can’t save your marriage, get you to lose that extra 10 pounds, or fix your financial problems. For people who work in crypto, you won’t find a better friend than Trump. That’s important for people trying to run businesses, build crypto apps, and create new tokens. What about the rest of us? Doesn’t matter. Sure, government policies can tinker around the edges, but crypto is a global asset. Prices come from buyers, sellers, and circumstances beyond any president’s control. The past two years saw a wave of innovation from non-US talent and US companies working abroad. Thousands of new projects have been launched. Hundreds more are waiting for market conditions to improve. Oddly enough, crypto is bigger under Biden now than Trump and Obama. Bitcoin’s hit three new all-time highs! For all those reasons, vote your conscience, not your crypto portfolio. If neither presidential candidate resonates with you, write somebody in. You can scribble “Bitcoin” on your ballot. Most likely, you live in a state where your presidential vote doesn't matter — any of the 43 states painted red or blue in the image below. Partisanship has already made your decision irrelevant. Why not vote for somebody or something you want? You have nothing to lose. He’s the guy who yelled at SEC Chairman Gary Gensler for missing the FTX fraud, among other grievances. Did you know FTX was one of the biggest donors to Tom Emmer’s campaign and gave almost $3 million to the GOP’s Congressional Leadership Fund while Emmer was in charge of it? Did you also know that Emmer was one of several Congresspeople who wrote a letter to Gensler asking him to stop investigating FTX (among other crypto entities)? If you support crypto and politicians, have you ever asked Emmer how he feels about protecting a scam? Taking money from a fraudster? Did he give the money back? Or, do you not care because Emmer says nice things about crypto and criticizes people you dislike? Because he shares your views? If you don’t support crypto and politicians, do you support Gensler’s nonsensical application of obsolete financial rules to stifle a new technology with arbitrary lawsuits and bizarre standards? Or, do you not care about people trying to build or use crypto, so you ignore it? Presidents don’t matter for your financial markets Why does market performance always seem disconnected from politics? The crypto market crashed more than 50% several times under Biden. It crashed more than 70% several times under Trump. Obama was even worse — multiple crashes of 80% or more. On the flip side, it went up 100% after Biden took office, 2,500% after Trump took office, and 5,500% after Obama took office. Seems fishy until you compare that with legacy assets. People make a big deal about the economy under one party or the other, but the economy — like crypto — seems to do whatever it wants regardless of who’s in office. Look at the stock market performance under Republicans and Democrats, adjusted for GDP. Red is Republican, blue is Democrat. Can you see any trend? Neither can I. You can extend this to the wider economy. Let’s do GDP. I counted the number of negative half-years in white: What about inflation? Same. What about employment? Same. What about budget deficits? For statistical consistency, we’ll calculate it as a percentage of GDP. Same. What about oil prices? Same. From a purely investing perspective, you get no advantage or disadvantage under Democrats and Republicans. On the whole, the US economy and its major assets perform as well or as poorly under one as the other. You can take these charts and move the boxes one or two years forward to account for the lag between a change of party and the results of their actions. You’ll get the same result. Know what matters Am I saying presidential elections don’t matter? No. They matter a lot. Every election carries high stakes for your business, employment opportunities, living standards, moral or religious beliefs, mental health, and many aspects of your life. But presidents can’t save your marriage, get you to lose that extra 10 pounds, or fix your financial problems. For people who work in crypto, you won’t find a better friend than Trump. That’s important for people trying to run businesses, build crypto apps, and create new tokens. What about the rest of us? Doesn’t matter. Sure, government policies can tinker around the edges, but crypto is a global asset. Prices come from buyers, sellers, and circumstances beyond any president’s control. The past two years saw a wave of innovation from non-US talent and US companies working abroad. Thousands of new projects have been launched. Hundreds more are waiting for market conditions to improve. Oddly enough, crypto is bigger under Biden now than Trump and Obama. Bitcoin’s hit three new all-time highs! For all those reasons, vote your conscience, not your crypto portfolio. If neither presidential candidate resonates with you, write somebody in. You can scribble “Bitcoin” on your ballot. Most likely, you live in a state where your presidential vote doesn't matter — any of the 43 states painted red or blue in the image below. Partisanship has already made your decision irrelevant. Why not vote for somebody or something you want? You have nothing to lose. The data shows that it is not possible to tell whether a Republican or a Democratic presidency is better for financial markets. It should be noted that there is no sense in studying earlier market periods. The world we live in was shaped as a result of World War II, so the behavior of markets before this key event is hardly relevant for analysis. Taking a look at a shorter time frame, Saxo analysts concluded that a Democratic presidency was better for markets. However, they evaluated market history starting with the presidency of Bill Clinton (1993 - 2001), which increased the likelihood of random coincidence. The general impact of a Democratic or Republican presidency is not the only catalyst that will matter for crypto markets. Regulation issues are extremely important. Trump or Harris: Does It Matter for Bitcoin?

So, I've started playing around with FiveThirtyEight's publicly available polling data. Why? Because I'm kind of just interested in the polling around the 2024 U.S. presidential election and the statistical side of things and was wondering how I would construct my own little prediction from scratch. So, here's what I did for a first try. (Disclaimer: I'm not a professional data scientist. Playing around with the data and exploring some things is really my main focus.) First and foremost, I want to keep it simple for now. As Kahneman explains in his book, Noise: Simple models often get the job done pretty well. ① Therefore, I only consider high-quality pollsters but without weighing their polls differently. I only include data points with a numeric_grade ≥2.5 (best: 3) in 538's dataset. ② What I do weigh is closeness to election day. The closer to November 5, the more relevant the poll. I consider polls from up to 90 days (~3 months) before, weighted linearly. A poll ending on August 7 has a weight of 1/90, and a poll ending on November 4 is one of 90/90. ③ Lastly, I'm not looking at national polls. What I focus on are the 7 swing states that are going to decide the election. With all this, we arrive at the following picture as of September 24. Harris in front in MI, NV, NC, PA, WI; Trump in AZ & GA. Based on these probabilities, we can also calculate the expected electoral votes (EVs) for each swing state, and the race overall: ④ This, however, doesn't take into account polling error, which was significant in both 2016 & 2020. So, I also did ①–③ for those two. I'm not considering elections before that because ever since Trump entered the stage, election dynamics have significantly changed. Old rules don't apply anymore. 2024 will be much more similar to 2020 & 2016 than to any election before that. The polling error for my methodology looks like this: Following the “keep it simple” rule, let's assume the polling error in 2024 will be the average of 2016/20 and apply it to the margins from above, also adding the polling error uncertainty to the uncertainty from the polls: And, again, these are the expected EVs based on the probabilities: Now, one could argue that pollsters might have learned their lesson and polling will get more accurate again this year. This, however, was already an argument in 2020. Plus, at least part of the problem seems to be that certain Trump supporters simply don't want to participate in polls anymore due to trust issues (see, e.g., https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/04/why-election-polls-were-wrong-in-2016-and-2020-and-whats-changing.html). Obviously, pollsters are trying to learn and adjust, but whether they'll be less off this year than in the two elections before, we'll only see on November 5. To get a better context, let's look at the industry's current state. Pre-Elections 38% of workers in the United States admit to using blockchain technology in their businesses, while over 40% of American adults own cryptocurrency. With the approval of Bitcoin ETFs earlier this year, there has been increased nationwide interest in digital assets and cryptocurrency. However, blockchain in the United States continues to grapple with a tricky landscape. Unclear regulatory guidelines, a perceived "Operation choke point 2.0," and the determined attempts of the SEC (Securities Exchange Commission) under Gary Gensler to clamp down on "unregistered securities"  have seen Coinbase, Ripple, and Terra Labs, among others, slammed with contentious lawsuits. The ideal presidential candidate, among other things, would address policy change, promote fair regulations, and encourage pro-blockchain development. The Trump Option Key industry players like Ryan Selkis, the CEO of Messari, the Winklevoss brothers of Gemini, Elon Musk, and many others consider former President Donald Trump as the ideal choice for blockchain innovation. And with good reason. Trump has been increasingly vocal in supporting digital assets and blockchain technology. A major highlight was the last Bitcoin conference in Nashville, where he made the headlines for his position in the industry and his newfound love for crypto. But this was not the case just a few years back.  During his tenure as the President of the United States in 2021, Trump came down heavily on crypto in a Twitter (now X) post where he clearly stated he was not a fan of digital assets.  His change of mind and explicit declaration of support for blockchain has been a rallying call that has reflected positively on public polls. Beyond verbal reassurance, the republican nominee's financial disclosure documents reveal he has over a million dollars investment in Ethereum and three separate NFT collections that have made over $7.5m in sales. His campaign team has also encouraged and received donations in crypto to the tune of 25 million US dollars at the end of July. At the Bitcoin conference, Trump also commented about firing Gery Gensler, prioritizing blockchain tech growth in the US, and shutting down CBDCs. These and many more of Trump's bold and vocal stance on the blockchain have endeared him to the crypto majority and positioned him as a much-needed ally to turn the tide politically. Kamala Harris However, Polymarket, the world's largest decentralized prediction market, shows a keenly contested battle ahead, with Kamala Harris trailing only a few points behind Trump. Harris clinched the presidential nomination of the democratic party after Joe Biden stepped down and is vying to become the first female President of the United States. Unlike Trump, Kamala Harris has refrained from any public commentary on how to approach the blockchain industry. Similarly, the recently released 92-page official platform of the democratic national committee (DNC) had no direct or implied mention of blockchain, crypto, or digital assets, sparking rumors that Kamala Haris may toe the Biden line. On the flip side, however, there are already positive signs that a democratic presidency may favor blockchain sentiment, especially with ongoing efforts from the DNC to reach out and interact with industry stakeholders.  Billionaires like Mike Cuban, with extensive investments in Web3 companies including Polygon, OpenSea, and Arbitrum, are also betting on the democratic candidate. In addition, the commitment of Tim Walz, Harris's running mate, to clean energy policies could significantly shape the future crypto-mining and pave the way for a more environmentally sustainable approach. The personal stance of Harris concerning the blockchain industry, however, remains unclear and may be the biggest drawback for moderate voters and the younger, more tech-savvy demography. Beyond Elections In the broader tech ecosystem, especially with the emergence of AI, the impact of which is currently sweeping access to all sectors, what will Trump or Harris's win mean for solutions incorporating blockchain technology? Since its explosive resurgence last year, artificial intelligence has highlighted the need for decentralized technologies to bridge the infrastructural and computing gap that traditional tech companies have not been able to fill. Decentralized marketplaces and DePIN have enjoyed growing popularity in the past year due to their affordability and competitive edge, especially in executing AI projects. However, a tight leash on AI development will spill over to blockchain, limiting the potential capabilities of Web3 and DePIN.  An elected Trump will be actively seeking a repeal of the 2023 Biden AI executive order in a bid to loosen the reins and give more room for development. While this is good news for innovation, critics are concerned about the potential deleterious effect of unchecked growth in the AI sector. The explosive pace of acceleration of generative AI technology, although capable of yielding short-term gains for Web3, may create new social problems.  Take, for example, the emergence of dangerously accurate deep fakes. On the other hand, democratic Harris will most likely seek to uphold the executive order, pushing for more guidelines to structure the sector with emphasis on consumer protection laws, an approach sources claim the majority of Republican and Democratic voters inherently support. Rounding Off The 5th of November is gearing up to be a pivotal moment for the future of Web3 in the United States. With blockchain as a major talking point, regulatory clarity and the perceived ability to implement favorable policies will play a crucial role in the outcome of the elections. Currently, only the Trump candidacy has articulated and maintained these ideals. Therefore, except for a last-minute solid pro-blockchain move by the democratic team, Donald Trump remains the prime choice for many industry stakeholders and enthusiasts. FACT SHEET: Biden-⁠Harris Administration Announces Initiative to Bolster Cybersecurity of U.S. Ports Today, the Biden-Harris Administration will issue an Executive Order to bolster the security of the nation’s ports, alongside a series of additional actions that will strengthen maritime cybersecurity, fortify our supply chains and strengthen the United States industrial base. This complex system supports $5.4 trillion worth of economic activity each year, contributes to the employment of more than 31 million Americans, and supports nearly 95% of cargo entering the U.S. The security of our critical infrastructure remains a national imperative in an increasingly complex threat environment. MTS owners and operators rely on digital systems to enable their operations, to include ship navigation, the movement of cargo, engineering, safety, and security monitoring. These systems have revolutionized the maritime shipping industry and American supply chains by enhancing the speed and efficiency of moving goods to market, but the increasing digital interconnectedness of our economy and supply chains have also introduced vulnerabilities that, if exploited, could have cascading impacts on America’s ports, the economy, and everyday hard-working Americans. Today’s actions include: Now, the U.S. Coast Guard will have the express authority to respond to malicious cyber activity in the nation’s MTS by requiring vessels and waterfront facilities to mitigate cyber conditions that may endanger the safety of a vessel, facility, or harbor. The Executive Order will also institute mandatory reporting of cyber incidents – or active cyber threats – endangering any vessel, harbor, port, or waterfront facility. Additionally, the Coast Guard will now have the authority to control the movement of vessels that present a known or suspected cyber threat to U.S. maritime infrastructure, and be able to inspect those vessels and facilities that pose a threat to our cybersecurity. President Biden will sign an Executive Order to bolster the Department of Homeland Security’s authority to directly address maritime cyber threats, including through cybersecurity standards to ensure that American ports’ networks and systems are secure. Owners and operators of these cranes must acknowledge the directive and take a series of actions on these cranes and associated Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) systems. This action is a vital step to securing our maritime infrastructure’s digital ecosystem and addresses several vulnerabilities that have been identified in the updated U.S. Maritime Advisory, 2024-00X – Worldwide Foreign Adversarial Technological, Physical, and Cyber Influence, that was released today. The U.S. Coast Guard will issue a Maritime Security Directive on cyber risk management actions for ship-to-shore cranes manufactured by the People’s Republic of China located at U.S. Commercial Strategic Seaports. Every day malicious cyber actors attempt to gain unauthorized access to MTS control systems and networks throughout the nation. The Proposed Rule will strengthen these digital systems by establishing minimum cybersecurity requirements that meet international and industry-recognized standards to best manage cyber threats. These actions build on prior actions by DHS including those taken by the Transportation Security Administration, and reflect the Administration’s commitment to leverage regulatory requirements in pursuit of safeguarding critical infrastructure. The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemakingon Cybersecurity in the Marine Transportation System. The Administration will invest over $20 billion, including through grants, into U.S. port infrastructure over the next 5 years through the President’s Investing in America Agenda, including the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. As a result, a U.S.-based subsidiary of Mitsui E&S Co., Ltd (Japan), is planning to onshore U.S. manufacturing capacity for its crane production. PACECO has a deep history in the container shipping industry, manufacturing the first dedicated ship-to-shore container crane in 1958 as PACECO Inc., and it continued U.S.-based crane manufacturing until the late 1980s. Mr. Harrison had brought Ginger back, averring that the poor bird would be lonesome; and Anne, feeling that she could forgive everybody and everything, offered him a walnut. But Ginger’s feelings had been grievously hurt and he rejected all overtures of friendship. He sat moodily on his perch and ruffled his feathers up until he looked like a mere ball of green and gold. “Why do you call him Ginger?” asked Anne, who liked appropriate names and thought Ginger accorded not at all with such gorgeous plumage. “My brother the sailor named him. I’m a huge fan of Sam Harris. I’ve read some of his books and I listen to his podcast “Waking Up” as often as I can on my way to and from work. I honestly think that he’s one of the best interviewers out there today. I know he prefers the term “conversations” rather than “interviews” when describing the contents of his podcast but I still think most journalists have a lot to learn from him. His questions are spot on, he lets his interviewees speak their mind and he rarely interrupts them. Apart from this he’s a great thinker and I agree with him about 95% of the time, especially when it comes to religion. I discovered him through various debate videos with two of my other heroes, Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens. I know how important secularism is to Sam and how the importance of the separation of church and state is at the very core of his world view. What I’d like to hear are his thoughts on the separation of money and state, the open blockchain. I’ve heard Sam mention blockchains on his podcast and I think he accepted Bitcoin donations a while back. I’ve also heard people from the crypto community mentioning Sam, last in a tweet from Richard Heart, who apparently wants to have a conversation with him. So Sam, should you come across this article somehow here’s my humble request: Get someone from the Bitcoin space on your podcast! There are a lot of thinkers out there that see this as the biggest, most disrupting innovation since the internet itself. My top pick would be Andreas Antonopolus but there are a lot of other great speakers on the subject such as Nick Szabo, Richard Heart and Don Tapscott to name a few. I know that this is an unusual way of getting someone’s attention and requesting podcast guests but I think that it just might be one that actually gets heard. I believe that unorthodox ways of communicating are necessary if you don’t want to drown in the ocean of voices that the internet is. Feel free to spread this as much as you want if you’d like to hear Sam’s thoughts on the topic. I for one will be an even more devout supporter of the Waking Up podcast if it works.

Improving How We Label Legal Documents Using AI

About the LevelUp series: At The Markup, we’re committed to doing everything we can to protect our readers from digital harm, write about the processes we develop, and share our work. We’re constantly working on improving digital security, respecting reader privacy, creating ethical and responsible user experiences, and making sure our site and tools are accessible. At The Markup, we make extensive use of custom interactive graphics to illustrate our stories. When I started my internship this summer, one thing I was curious about was the process for creating and integrating those graphics into the content management system (CMS). When I worked for Berkeleyside and even my high school newspaper, I struggled to find an elegant solution and discovered that this is a common and historical headache in the news industry. The reality is that a CMS like WordPress intentionally limits customization. The job of a CMS is to provide a simple interface for storing and editing structured data. Custom graphics, however, are inherently ad hoc and unstructured. To newsroom developers creating custom interactives for the first time, it can be hard knowing how and where to incorporate them into the CMS. Choose the wrong process or place, and you’re left with an unruly mess. Let’s Get Philosophical One facet of software engineering, as in life, is the need to make trade-offs in the face of constrained resources. Finding that balance between flexibility and standardization is the essence of designing software, and integrating graphics into a CMS is no different. Consider images. We want a CMS to be responsible for storing an image and its metadata (a caption, credit, alt text) and relationships (the stories it’s included in, the user that uploaded it). It is not built to parse or render the contents of the image—that’s left to people, design software, and browsers. The same goes for graphics. We should design a CMS to be responsible for storing a reference to a graphic and its metadata and relationships but not for the graphic’s functionality or how it’s displayed. However, the part that trips up some engineers is that they try to anticipate common use cases for journalists and add features to create graphics within the CMS. This is often a Sisyphean task that will leave nobody completely satisfied because of the uniqueness of custom interactives. Just because graphics have some interaction with the CMS doesn’t mean the CMS should be responsible for everything about them. This separation of concerns shouldn’t extend to the newsroom. We want editorial developers to be able to focus on their work without worrying about how their code could disrupt the product and infrastructure teams, and vice versa. (Although the reality is that everybody does a bit of everything on a smaller team like The Markup.) Ultimately, all of us are responsible for one product, not two disparate products. Our Process Before code editors are opened and local environments are launched, a newsroom developer will work with editors and reporters to brainstorm visuals for a piece. The flexibility of the system means that we can modify or create other templates as our team’s tastes and needs evolve. For example, I’m a big fan of Svelte, a front-end framework that’s popular in newsrooms (and was built by Rich Harris when he was a developer at The New York Times). In addition to how intuitive it is, Svelte results in leaner code than other frameworks, which we try to avoid to keep our article pages snappy regardless of device or internet connection. While working on Blacklight, which is more of an app than a graphic, I modified the template to add support for Svelte. Because the output is all HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, nothing about our WordPress integration had to be changed. Any changes to the template are applied only to graphics moving forward, and each graphic uses its own copy of the current template. Helper functions and styles from the template, as well as the site’s global stylesheet at the time, are baked into each graphic. Any improvements made to the template—such as adding Svelte—are opt-in and can be easily merged when needed. Once a graphic is created, deployed, and published, it shouldn’t require continued maintenance. As of this writing, we’ve created more than 300 graphics with this system. If we had to constantly fix bugs as we made changes to the template and site, we would be quickly overwhelmed. When I started my internship this summer, one thing I was curious about was the process for creating and integrating those graphics into the content management system (CMS). When I worked for Berkeleyside and even my high school newspaper , I struggled to find an elegant solution and discovered that this is a common and historical headache in the news industry. The job of a CMS is to provide a simple interface for storing and editing structured data. Custom graphics, however, are inherently ad hoc and unstructured. To newsroom developers creating custom interactives for the first time, it can be hard knowing how and where to incorporate them into the CMS. Choose the wrong process or place, and you’re left with an unruly mess. Let’s Get Philosophical One facet of software engineering, as in life, is the need to make trade-offs in the face of constrained resources. Finding that balance between flexibility and standardization is the essence of designing software, and integrating graphics into a CMS is no different. Consider images. We want a CMS to be responsible for storing an image and its metadata (a caption, credit, alt text) and relationships (the stories it’s included in, the user that uploaded it). It is not built to parse or render the contents of the image—that’s left to people, design software, and browsers. The same goes for graphics. We should design a CMS to be responsible for storing a reference to a graphic and its metadata and relationships but not for the graphic’s functionality or how it’s displayed. However, the part that trips up some engineers is that they try to anticipate common use cases for journalists and add features to create graphics within the CMS. This is often a Sisyphean task that will leave nobody completely satisfied because of the uniqueness of custom interactives. Just because graphics have some interaction with the CMS doesn’t mean the CMS should be responsible for everything about them. within This separation of concerns shouldn’t extend to the newsroom. We want editorial developers to be able to focus on their work without worrying about how their code could disrupt the product and infrastructure teams, and vice versa. (Although the reality is that everybody does a bit of everything on a smaller team like The Markup.) Ultimately, all of us are responsible for one product, not two disparate products.
