How to Navigate the Discord Channel/Server of a Crypto Project

Hey, how are you? So, the other day, I came across a Discord blog titled . The title piques our interest and gives a sense of wonder that in the world, they are accomplishing this and that with scalability. HOW DISCORD STORES TRILLIONS OF MESSAGES So, I’m going to summarize the above blog post for you because I had to read it several times to grasp everything. Let’s get started. First thing first, what exactly are MongoDB, Cassandra, and ScyllaDB? What are the differences between them? MongoDB, Cassandra, and ScyllaDB Explained It’s a NoSQL database management system of type document based. In MongoDB, JSON-like documents are created, and since it’s in the NoSQL family, it’s not ACID compliant. Mongodb has Master—Slave models, and the data model is unstructured here, thus, providing support for use cases where a Rich Data model is required. MongoDB: : It also belongs to the NoSQL family, and its data model is structured and is based on columns, which is why it falls under the wide-column store type NoSQL database. Cassandra provides high availability by having multiple Master nodes in a cluster, and thus, provides support for use cases where database querying is required based on the primary key and where the system is write-heavy. Cassandra : It is also a wide-column store-based NoSQL database like Cassandra and is also API compatible with Amazon DynamoDB and Cassandra. The major difference between ScyllaDB and Cassandra is it is written in C++, but Cassandra is written in JAVA, and instead of relying on page-cache, it stores row-cache making it more optimized and fast than Cassandra. ScyllaDB Ok, let’s do some time travel; come with me Current Time — May 2015 This month, Discord is launched, and everything is stored in a single MongoDB replica set. Current Time — November 2015 Booom, Discord now has 100 million messages stored in DB, but guess what, the data and the index could no longer able to fit in RAM, and latency becomes unpredictable. Now what? Discord decided to migrate to a new DB, and they need a database that fulfills at least these requirements: Linear Scalability Automatic failover Low maintenance Predictable Performance Open source Not a blob-type store Because now, the company knows some common patterns like: The read/write ratio on the platform is 50/50. They have broadly 3 types of groups — Voice Heavy, Private Groups, and Public Groups, and all of them have different behavior for disk cache. Discord has some features in the pipeline like a pinned message, full-text search, last 30 days mentions, etc. And they finalize and go with Cassandra which is suitable for the above points. Now comes the situation of how they should do data modeling. In MongoDB, they indexed the messages using channel_id and created_at. But in Cassandra, they go with a composite primary key ((channel_id, bucket), message_id). Why? Cassandra is a kind of KKV store where the first K stands for Partition key, and the second is Clustering key. Channel_id was sufficient for the partition key; then why did they choose bucket? And what is Bucket here? See point 6. But created_at would not be sufficient for clustering because, in a channel, two messages can have the same created_at value. Since they were creating message_id which is a SnowFlake, this 64-bit id has a composition of a timestamp. So, after the team started importing messages in Cassandra, they got some errors because of a partition size of more than 100MB. Now to make partitions less than 100MB, they needed some changes in the Partition key such that the size of the partition is less than 100MB. So, after studying the patterns, the team decided that if they bucket 10 days of messages, the partition size would be less than 100MB. That is the reason for having the Partition key as (channel_id, bucket). Now Comes the Time to Launch Cassandra They did launch Cassandra but made read/write double on both MongoDB and Cassandra to check how Cassandra is behaving with production data. But the team got some errors and the reason for that was - Cassandra is a type of NoSQL database and provides availability over consistency. So now, the problem arises if two users are performing an action on the same message such as when one user edits the message and the other one deletes it at the same time. Then, users were getting errors on editing. As mentioned above, Cassandra provides availability over consistency, so to resolve the issue, the team added a validation that author_id is null(which means the message is deleted); then they create a tombstone. And this tombstone is nothing, just the deleted message. And while reading the database, tombstones were skipped. And this tombstone has time to live for 10 days which was later moved to 2 days because of issues they faced with one customer after launch. Hence, Discord launched and successfully made primary DB — Cassandra with a performance of less than 1 ms latency in write and less than 5 ms in read operations. Now, Somewhere in 2022 Now, Discord touches the trillion mark with around 177 nodes of Cassandra, but again, DB is suffering from various issues, and even latency was unpredictable. Out of various issues, the database was facing two major issues: : This is a term Discord uses when there is a situation where high traffic comes on a specific partition which results in unbounded concurrency, leading to latency. In simple terms, let’s say there are two partitions one is of a small group of friends with less read/write and the other is a widely spread public group with lots of reads/write operations. Hot Partition Reads are more expensive than writes in Cassandra, so this hot partition situation comes up when there are a lot of reads, and the specific partition falls behind and causes latency spikes in all other operations. : The team also spent a lot of time tuning JVM because that also pauses the operations and causes huge latency. Garbage Collector issues So How Did They Resolve It? We know already that they have an option of ScyllaDB(Cassandra alternative but in C++) which will resolve GC issues. But Hot partitions can still happen in ScyllaDB as well. To resolve this and to reduce huge traffic on the database, Discord added a data service — a layer between the API monolith server and DB Clusters. This service is written in Rust. This data service performs two major tasks: Request Coalescing: If multiple users are hitting the same read query, then only the first query hits the DB, and the tasks/query gets stored in the data service. Other similar queries return values from the data service itself. 2. Upstream of data services: Here, they implemented hash-based routing which means for each request, the data service provides a routing key. For messages, its channel_id. So every query for messages in the same channel hits the same instance of data service which also prevents hot partitions. And that’s it. This is how Discord handles trillions of data. So, back to FanCircles; we built a SaaS platform that allowed us to build apps for IOS and Android individually branded for each client we worked with. So, for example, you can download the Boy George app in the app stores, and it’s powered by FanCircles. My NFT Moment In December 2021 I bought my first NFT and had a sudden realization that if Discord was the platform of choice, there was a massive problem approaching for the NFT world. Discord was built for gamers, by gamers, and it’s not user-friendly enough for NFT holders to use as their community platform, at least for the coming target market of web2 brands getting into the space. Why Discord Won't Work For Most NFT Projects Long Term

If you've used Discord for any amount of time, I'm sure that you've come across at least a few Discord bots. Given or , they all do the same thing and that's add functionality as well as a new way to interact with the platform. This is a fascinating idea as not many other platforms allow you to implement your own modifications. If you look at the Bots job postings on Discord's , you'll see a big part of what they are trying to do with bots is “empower developers” and “give their dev community more ways to express their creativity and build exciting apps”. By giving people a way to interact with a piece of software that they use every day, it can inspire new and experience developers alike to share and develop their creativity. A prime example of this are the dev communities behind the and libraries. These teams work to build something that allows their dev peers to create easily as well as express their uniqueness. I have used both libraries and I can tell you firsthand that both are fantastic contributions to the Discord community. Discord.JS Discord.py I currently have another post in the works describing both libraries in-depth and which to choose when first starting out. Both have their ups and downs, but both are great contributions nonetheless. More recently though, I’ve been more interested in what is going on under the hood. By reading through the official , you really get a sense of how deep the rabbit hole goes. Discord API documentation The layer of abstraction between your code and the API created by the aforementioned libraries really simplify the process for getting your ideas out there. You don’t have know anything about HTTP request or WebSockets to be able to interact with Discord’s API, so many people doing bother to go through the official documentation. This blog post is going to be about my journey through the documentation and what I’ve learned from reading it. Connecting to the API When creating my first bot I didn’t think much about how the data is being received or transferred. All that I was really interested in was that I was going to have my bot send a picture of Nicolas Cage on command, and to have the bot play Imperial March when I joined a voice channel. After a few bots, I started to get interested in this topic though, and I turned to the documentation. It all starts with an . The documentation defines an interaction as “the message that your application receives when a user uses an application command or a message component”. That means that when you use a slash command, user command, or message command as well as interact with a message component, Discord will send your application an interaction object. What’s more interesting is that you don’t really need a “bot user” to be able to get these interactions. If you scroll down the page from the interaction object definition, you’ll see a section called “Interactions and Bot Users”. interaction In this section it specifies that interactions give you the ability to interact with an app without a bot user needed. This was news to me and where my interest really started to take off. That being said a bot token is still needed to interact with gateway events or to query information, which is what anyone that has created a bot is more familiar with. Ok, that makes sense, but how does your bot receive this interaction? The documentation states that there are two ways to receive these interactions. The first being to connect to a , and the second being to create a . mutually exclusive WebSocket gateway webhook To connect to the gateway, you first should send a HTTP GET request to “https://discord.com/api/gateway” or “https://discord.com/api/gateway/bot” which will respond with a WebSocket URL. The client should cache this value and only request a new WebSocket URL if it is unable to connect to the previous. The bot gateway will return with a few extra fields including the recommended number of shards and the session start limit. Once you have the URL you can and begin to handle interactions that come through. complete the handshake The second approach is to use outgoing webhooks. To set up outgoing webhooks, go to your application in . Once there, in “General Information” you can scroll down and find “INTERACTIONS ENDPOINT URL”, insert the URL that you would like to handle interactions with as an HTTP POST request. Discord’s documentation shows an example of handling a ping interaction using Flask. Discord’s developer portal There are a few steps that you do have to before this endpoint would be considered valid. The first is that the endpoint must be ready to send an acknowledge signal back to Discord when the ping interaction comes. The second being that you must set up is the signature headers. After setting up the proper security and authorization, Discord will save the URL and you will start receiving HTTP POST request with interactions. complete A very important note to mention is that once you set up a webhook, you can no longer use the gateway. Discord only allows you to use one form of interaction at a time. Of course, you can change your mind later and simply delete the URL in your application inside the developer portal and it will be able to use the gateway again. Congratulations, you are now connected to Discord’s bot API. What's Next? Well depending on what path you took to receive interactions from Discord, your path will vary. In this tutorial, we are going to create a Discord bot that will allow you to automatically send messages from a Discord server to Notion, if an Admin reacts to them with a specified emoji, say ✍️. This can notably be useful to automatically save FAQs, user suggestions, or just generally great content from your Discord server. First, we are going to create a Discord bot, save its access token, and invite it in our Discord server. You can skip the following section, if you are already familiar with creating Discord bots. How to create a Discord Bot Log on to the Discord. Go to the page. applications Click on the “New Application” button, give a name to your application, and click “Create”. Navigate to the “Bot” tab and click “Add Bot”, and confirm with “Yes, do it!”. <a name="discord">5.</a> Copy the access token you get and save it somewhere safe. We are now going to invite our bot in our server. Go "Back to Applications" and open your bot's page. Open the “OAuth2” tab. Go to URL Generator and select “bot” under “scopes”. For this application, our bot needs to read and write messages, as well as possibly manage emojis if you want to use custom reactions, and read message history, if you want to add support for messages posted before the addition of the bot to the server. We select the corresponding permissions, and copy the generated URL. This URL will open a Discord permission page that will allow you add the bot to any server you manage. Now let's create a Notion integration that will allow our Discord bot to write into a Notion page. You can skip the following section if you are already familiar with the Notion API. How to create an integration with the Notion API The Notion API is currently in Beta, so a few things described here may change, but but as of the time of this writing (January 2022), here is how to create a Notion integration that will allow us to write into a Notion page from an external application. Go to page and click the "+ New integration" button. My Integrations Give your integration a name and select the workspace you would like it to be associated with. We won't need any user information for this application, so select No User Information and submit your form. <a name="notion1"> 3.</a> Copy the "Internal Integration Token" you get and save it somewhere safe. Create a new page in your Notion workspace, and insert a new database in it, by typing /table and selecting a full page table.

A Discord Bot to Save Messages as Notion Notes

If you want to establish some nice automated integration between two or more applications, you can make use of low-code tools like Zapier or Integromat. These tools have over 1000 apps available for integration. You can link up multiple applications and create a smooth automation workflow. 😎 In this article, we’ll make use of Integromat to connect Discord to a form. Creating our Integromat account We’d open Integromat and proceed to sign up/in. homepage Click on the button Create a new scenario With the huge “ ”, we can start adding an application and create connections with other applications. + Configuring a webhook We’ll set up a webhook URL that we can send form data to and trigger appropriate reactions So, we’d click the big “ ” button and select the application + Webhooks (Never mind my sketches, you deserve a better artist ) 😭 Select then select and give the custom webhook a name. We’d get a webhook URL that we will keep for later. Custom webhook Add We’d add a new module We’d select the to discord, add a new connection with any text in the content and approve Integromat permissions to our Discord server. Then we should see the bot in our server: Post a Message We’d create a simple HTML form next to send data to the webhook URL by adding the URL to the attribute.
