The Noonification: Now We Know: Exit to Community Is Possible (1/3/2024)

Back in 2019, I made a plea: “ .” In some circles, at least, the argument quickly caught on. This is because, for startup companies, an exit through an acquisition or public offering is the goal that all else points toward. It is the payoff for founders, investors, and early employees. I contended that the roots of the exit as we know it are rotten. Exits turn companies into commodities, and exits often turn those companies against the people who rely on them most. We need a different kind of exit that is just and accountable, an exit to community. Startups Need a New Option: Exit to Community As the E2C meme first spread, I heard from founders and others looking to do a community exit themselves. But I didn’t have a model or a blueprint to offer—just a vision and a story that I hoped we could learn to tell together. To develop the idea, I teamed up with my longtime collaborator . Years before, we had tried to turn Twitter toward community ownership, with that appeared on the company’s 2017 ballot and . (If we had won, perhaps Twitter would still exist.) In early 2020, we started and joined with to run a for founders interested in the idea. We published and , and E2C was featured in . Danny also co-founded the , a group of journalists, marketers, stakeholder engagement specialists, and academics working to advance E2C in practice. In the years since, we have quietly supported and learned from a variety of experiments, helping entrepreneurs push the limits of what is possible. Memes, we believe, will only take us as far as they are backed up by the hard work of courageous pioneers. As a new year arrives, I am thrilled to announce the release of a new library of E2C stories that the E2C Collective has created at . E2C.how The snapshots range from my Colorado neighbors and , which converted to employee ownership, to major open-source software projects like and , which are mini-democracies accountable to their developers. There is , a Chinese electric car company whose founder set aside a chunk of stock for car-buyers, and , a co-op founded by employees who quit their previous job in protest. There are also blockchain-based efforts, like and , that have tried to make good on a new technology’s often-betrayed promises for making a more inclusive economy. Entrepreneurs, investors, users, and workers alike are all recognizing the need for a new approach, and they are trying lots of different ways to get it. They are relying on old technology and the latest innovations. They are using many different legal structures and techniques for empowering communities. The resourcefulness is pretty astonishing, really. 2. In just about every case, E2C attempts have faced profound challenges. They are often working at the very edge of what the law allows, because many of our laws were written to serve profit-seeking investors, not communities. Much of what communities wanted was simply not possible. Truly changing the landscape of exits will mean policy change that takes communities seriously as sources of innovation and accountability. There is widespread craving for a better kind of exit—and the creativity to back it up. Better exits need to be easier—and this will require structural change. I want to stress this second point. It first became clear to me when working with collaborators at Zebras Unite on the idea of . The founder wanted it. The business model made perfect sense—a rare platform whose users actually pay for it. The company was up for a fire sale. But we simply could not find investors or lenders prepared to back a deal like that. This is a problem I have seen with many other co-op efforts, over and over. Policy is the most powerful shaping force for where capital can aggregate, and there is no adequate policy to support capital for large-scale community ownership. This is also the reason we have lost many community-owned companies in recent years, from to —the most successful community-owned companies too often can’t access the capital they need to flourish. turning Meetup into a user-owned cooperative New Belgium Brewing Mountain Equipment Co-op I’ve seen the same pattern repeat itself with blockchains, where the E2C idea has taken hold more than anywhere. Blockchains can enable organizations that are collectively owned and governed by their users, and millions of people have been attracted by possibility. But what has happened in practice? Any time a new project started gaining traction, it would become drowned in investment from the same venture-capital firms that fueled earlier kinds of startups. The driving force became not the tech or the communities but the investors, once again. This pattern is not inevitable. History has demonstrated that, with the right policy in place, large-scale capital access for community ownership is possible. That’s what happened after 1936, when the US government passed the Rural Electrification Act; thanks to a (revenue positive!) loan program at the Department of Agriculture, cooperatives now operate nuclear power plants and deliver high-speed Internet in once-underserved areas. In 1974, a relatively small change to the federal tax code unleashed the employee stock ownership plan, or ESOP, which has enabled millions of workers to become co-owners of the companies where they work. Today, most policy that governs taxation and finance is built on the assumption that investor profits at all costs is the norm and the ideal. , this assumption is intolerable. We need to demand changes that reorder how capital is able to be organized and deployed. These changes can be relatively small to make a difference—tweaks to tax codes and securities laws, for instance—and they can win support from diverse constituencies. As Marjorie Kelly powerfully argues Too often, I have come to believe, advocates of cooperatives and community ownership have put their energy downstream of the real policy problems. They focus on gaining access to small loan funds and technical assistance for small companies. But they neglect the upstream challenge of exits—and other endgames for the most successful companies in the economy. Unless we change the options available at the highest levels, any gains that communities make for early-stage companies can be erased once companies grow and need capital at the highest levels. On the other hand, when community ownership flourishes at large scales, that’s an attractor — something the whole rest of the economy can start moving toward. Rather than fighting over crumbs, advocates of community ownership should be asking: What change will we win for community ownership that does for future generations what our predecessors won for us? Historically, major structural change for community ownership has involved a three-step process. First, the experiments: creative, path-breaking people demonstrate the need and the possibility of something better. This is where E2C is right now, and our snapshots portray that experimentation beautifully. Now we need to learn from those experiments, identifying what works and where the barriers lie. Second, the policy: Here’s when we build on the experiments, which hint at what is possible, and try to break down the biggest barriers in the way of unleashing economic justice. We assemble broad coalitions to advocate for achievable change, grounding our stories in the experiences of people who need change the most. And we win. Third, the practice: Policy is only the beginning. What matters more is what we do with it. Here, we need to grow our movements and our culture to use the new policy in the best ways, and we watch out for those who want to exploit our policy—as any policy can be exploited. We spread, and community ownership becomes a new normal. I have hunches about the kinds of policy E2C needs, but above all I am interested in learning from a shared conversation. What paths should we be organizing around? The tax code? Public loan guarantees? Securities exemptions? What would have the greatest effect for community ownership at the most achievable political cost? Four years after first calling for E2C, I have become more convinced than ever that focusing on the exit—the goals the economy sets, not just its entry-points—is the right place to be. I hope more people recognize how vital it is to rethink what startups aim for. Meanwhile, I am grateful for all those who have worked together to make this new phase possible through the E2C Collective. That includes, currently, Hazel Devjani, Adina Glickstein, Valentine Erokhin, Nanz Nair, Marisa Rando, Sheba Rivera, and Eli Zeger. These people are weaving a fairer kind of economy into being. Eugene Lisovskiy has been spearheading global tech companies for over 18 years, building communities and raising capital everywhere he goes. From working on , now the leading eBook platform in Eastern Europe, to growing into a top offline map app with over 150 million users, Lisovskiy’s passion for analytics and bringing people together have combined to lead him on a unique journey to his current project, Level Up Basket, a basketball training platform powered by community and gamification. LitRes.com MAPS.me In this interview, Eugene shares his opinions on growing a robust community in any niche, adapting your product to the metaverse, the power of outsourcing, and the future of AI. Let's talk about your backstory first. How did you get started in the tech industry? I started my career in 2004. Believe it or not, my educational background is actually in biotech and engineering rather than business! When I began college in 1999, I felt like biotech and medicine would be my future, and I expected to graduate and end up wearing a lab coat and creating things in a lab somewhere. Life had different plans, though. My first kid was born right before I graduated from college, so, of course, I needed to make money and find something stable. I already had some entrepreneurial experience, so I took that and combined it with a side project I had at the time developing websites. This was fine as a short-term fix, but I knew it wasn't what I wanted to keep doing. As I was looking around for system administrator or web developer jobs (again, because they were easy, reliable income), I got an offer from an international company to be their internet marketing manager. Did I have any experience with that? Absolutely not, but I thought it sounded like an interesting opportunity, so I went for it. It turns out that I was good at internet marketing, and I built a network in Europe that let me eventually move on from that global software company to grow my experience. In 2010, I moved from internet marketing to the tech startup space. From there, I co-founded two companies, co-owned Russia's top e-book store, LitRes, and became CEO of Maps.me, which is what people primarily know me for. I've also been involved with a few other tech startups, and I'm currently the co-founder and CEO of a new basketball training app company called Level Up Basketball. Since Maps.me became so popular under your leadership, let's talk about that a little more. What types of problems are you solving with projects like Maps.me? A lot of people don't realize that giants like Google Maps don't have very up-to-date or complete maps for lesser-traveled regions, and they are expensive for commercial use. While it makes sense for there to be a better map of New York City (a densely populated urban area) than, say, a village in Nepal (a small, remote location), it's still just as important to have an accurate, complete map for both. First responders and humanitarian organizations rely on GPS and map tools to find people who are lost or to undertake search and rescue missions after natural disasters, so these maps can literally be a life-or-death thing. Here are the problems Maps.me solves: First, it puts mapping tools directly into the hands of anyone with a smartphone. Anyone can add or edit map locations and write reviews. Free, accessible maps are a core tenet of the OpenStreetMap project, which is what Maps.me's data is built on. Second, it creates a fun, rewarding community that encourages users to take charge of mapping out their locations. Nine months after the editor tool was added, over a million edits had already been made across 231 countries. The desire to help was there; people just needed an easy tool like Maps.me to make it happen. I like to think of it as "Minecraft for adults," also serving the greater good. Access to complete, accurate maps is critical and beneficial for the global community. What do you think other businesses and regular internet users can do to address this problem? Yes, these maps are absolutely vital. Without accurate mapping, NGOs have a much harder time coordinating their efforts and aiding those who need it most, and first responders can't do their jobs as well or as quickly. In 2017, Hurricane Maria was devastating Puerto Rico. The community came together to map the entire area within a week so that emergency teams could find where buildings and other structures had been to help people who were stuck or suffering much faster. I think one of the best things companies can do is remove things like copyright barriers and proprietary hardware or software requirements. It should be a relatively easy, inexpensive task to access a reliable map, regardless of where you are. Another thing that would be helpful is more cooperation. OpenStreetMap and Maps.me work so well because people from all over the globe cooperate to help improve the maps. Businesses could learn from this. As for users? I think raising awareness that this is an issue would be a helpful step. Most people don't think twice about just opening Google Maps to get to their destination; I'm sure some still don't even know an open-source alternative exists. Something else to do would be to make their voices heard on the topic. The internet is great for sparking real change, so I think if more people were vocal about map accessibility, we could see a paradigm shift. ? You’ve also been working on LitRes, the leading eBook platform in Eastern Europe. What are some important milestones you have reached during your tenure there? How did they affect the company's growth When I joined LitRes in September 2011, we had a 300k user base, $50k monthly revenue from the website and a marketing team of just 3 people, including myself. When I left the company in 2016, we had 23M users (that’s 80x growth!) and $15M annual revenue. That happened mainly to these three innovations: 1. An engineering approach to marketing: I used the technical department as my resource. It was a unique approach in 2011 that helped to reach a full synergy of technical and marketing departments. Today we call this kind of top manager - CPO. With this approach, we integrated many marketing technologies into products that helped grow quickly. 2. A passionate approach to team building and leadership: I always dreamed of building my own marketing team of growth hackers, who will share my passion for great achievements, and I did it. In 2016, the marketing team had already 12 people. 3. Strong execution process: I worked in several startups before LitRes, where I created my own task management methodology for startups, using Google Sheets as the tool for it. This approach helped to execute everything I implemented in marketing and product. Why was the engineering approach to marketing so important? When you have thousands of titles in your digital catalog, you must have very well-designed pages, folders, categories, and URL structures on the website to fit SEO, SEM, and direct marketing needs. Good catalog structure helped us to create a unique engine that generated over 5M high-quality ads for Google/Yandex search ads. This business case was highlighted on the Yandex website. At the same time, we had a boost in SEO traffic as a result of good structure and focus on UGC, where we incentivized users to leave book reviews. In 2012, I initiated a development of four key marketing services needed for fast growth: a personal recommendation engine that increased revenue coming from email marketing by up to 18% of the whole company's revenue an automated high-quality ads generator a smart responsive direct marketing platform that could send a smart email to web users, push notifications for mobile users and check each channel's health and user satisfaction cohort-based traffic attribution system that helped to track each customer acquisition channel separately and reach better LTV/CAC numbers. Also, I saw great potential in the development of the app for audiobooks. We started the development of the app called “Listen!” in March 2012, launched the first version on October 2012, and in January 2013 we hit the top 10 overall grossing in the App Store and Google Play, becoming the #1 app with audiobooks. In 2015, the company generated $15M in revenue and became profitable and, soon after that, I decided to leave the company to become the CEO of MAPS.ME and expand my experience on a global scale. In 2013-2015, LitRes was #1 by revenue and installs in the non-gaming category in mobile stores in Russia. That’s great. Let’s now talk about Level Up Basketball, your newest project. Why basketball? What prompted the idea for this company? Basketball has been a great love for me since I was a kid. I remember growing up in an area that didn't have much interest in or community around the sport. I would have loved to have an online community of people who could help me get better and talk to me about basketball! I like being able to leverage all of my experience with community building, app development and analytics to come in and carve out spaces that serve a purpose (mapping, sharing reviews, learning basketball, etc.) but also have a social, gamified element. In these communities, people can share whatever niche passion they have with others who will deeply understand them rather than feeling awkward talking about their interests to real-life friends and family who don't share their passion. So, Level Up Basketball is a true passion project for me. My co-founder is actually the guy I grew up playing basketball with. We would play until it was too dark to see the ball in front of our faces! He has been creating basketball-focused businesses since 2000, so when he came to me for advice about building a project for digitizing the training process, I was immediately all-in. I was ready to immediately leverage all of my skills to build something huge that has never really been done before. It’s hard for basketball coaches and amateur players to find a reliable way to source training drills and create community around their love for basketball, which is crazy to me because it’s the number two team sport in the world with huge 450M players! Sure, there are lots of YouTube videos and blogs, but it’s really difficult for people to aggregate the quality videos and tutorials on their own. With Level Up Basketball, we’ve created a single hub for players around the world to access a unique kind of training app that adds features like gamification and “social clout” to make the experience more fun. Players can earn digital coins that can be used to upgrade their avatars and change their appearance. We’re also planning to connect to the metaverse in the future, allowing players’ avatars to participate in virtual games based on their real-world skills for an even more immersive experience. We’re even working on adding blockchain rewards, which are really appealing to Gen Z.

The cloud-native ecosystem directed at simplifying IT Operations and Management (O&M) brings into play AIOps which has revolutionalized the IT world by better-allowing organizations to run scalable applications. Parallelly, AIOps has also fueled the proliferation of analogous technologies such as containerization and container orchestration and monitoring tools such as Kubernetes and Prometheus. AIOps coupled with container adoption and the orchestration tools, Kubernetes primarily, allows enterprises to streamline, orchestrate and optimize data flow, and provides greater flexibility in helping the organizations deploy their services. A consistent flow of pipeline operationalization is maintained wherein everything is monitored and resolved almost in real-time. As the human intervention is minimal this saves enterprises thousands of hours manually seeking the hidden sources of errors and trying to fix them. Also, AIOps enables organizations to anticipate and reciprocate potential future threats well in time by risk assessment and mitigation. Learn more about my thoughts and opinions on AIOps and my journey in the tech industry via the interview below. 1. Tell us about your journey. What do you do and what do you love about it? I started my career in Life Sciences and was a hard-core research scholar for two years post the completion of my post-graduation. I had a flair for writing and was doing well in the projects (primarily Cytology and Cytogenetics) that I laid my hands on. After dedicating two years to Life Science research, I switched to the role of a Business Analyst. Having a statistical background, I was able to solve real-time business problems quickly. I think the thing that I love the best about my journey is that I am able to amalgamate the power of emotional, empathetic, and compassionate storytelling with the power of data. As a technology writer, you still need to speak to the audience in an impactful way that involves appealing to both the emotional and logical sides of the spectrum. I love the fact that creating thought leadership content has immense power and how it can play a pivotal role in inspiring positive transformations in the lives of people around us. 2. Tell us more about your work. What do you make/write/manage/build? I operate with a philosophy of choosing corporations and collaborations over the competition. I am blessed and grateful for the fact that pretty early in my career I learned the power of teamwork. At the end of the day, it's all about people and teams; individual contributions matter and should be highly acclaimed but the fact is ultimately the teams win remains undisputed. Though I also believe that individual contributions deserve all the honor in the world. I work within a fast-paced and agile setup. Currently, I am working with a B2B Media Publisher company Valasys Media and head a really small but dynamic team of 4 content writers that report directly to me. We are all ‘CreativeOps Crusaders,’ as I lovingly and elatedly call my team, who work closely with each other and cross-departmentally to create high-quality technical content. I along with my team am working on several new home-grown and client side of ventures. Some pivotal ones include assimilating intent data into creating highly convertible content pieces including all kinds of lead magnets, landing pages, white papers, and case studies, and working closely with a team of instructional designers to infuse that visual magic to enhance the appeal of the content and working on designing and orchestrating a seamless and invincible multichannel marketing to accentuate ROI for our clients. I am also working to educate myself about how we can infuse the latest technological innovations into our MarTech stack. The practice of designing a well-thought-of PR Strategy for the in-house and client side of things is something I specialize in. I have worked with some reputable journalists from Thrive Global, and the CIO Group of Magazines and have recently interviewed the . PR Man - Maxim Behar When it comes to exploring and bringing technical innovations in marketing and advertising endeavors, I follow the trends but I also learn a lot by experimenting and innovating my own unique hacks experientially. And, that's important because that's what makes us who we are instead of just being clones or replicas of each other. In the former case, the downside of blindly following the trends is that you never realize when your passion for work takes the shape of monotony or all sorts of mid-career crises, whatever way you want to put it across as. 3. How did you start writing? What made you choose HackerNoon for publishing your work? I come from a family where writing runs in the blood and also inherit this logical approach to problem-solving from my late grandfather who was a renowned scientist. I had a knack for writing since my childhood days. Though professionally I embraced writing only after my post-graduation. I initially chose Hackernoon for guest blogging as it is a highly credible website with very high domain authority. Soon after, before I could realize it, I was smitten and awestruck by the amazing community at Hackernoon – ranging from editors to individual contributors all of them are amazing. Before I could realize it I had become a regular contributor to the platform. I love being visible and having a voice amongst several like-minded people on the platform. What excites you in tech? Tell us about your favorite technology and why you are passionate about it. The most interesting thing about technology is its dynamism and impact. So what's trending today may very well become obsolete 10 years down the line. However, if someone is able to precognitive analyze the impact of any emerging tech even before it becomes a trend and amalgamate it into solving business problems; that's when he/she can make the most of it. So, even if that technology is merely ephemeral, you'll be able to make the hay while the sun shines. So three things are important here: a) being someone who can develop a futuristic vision for technology to harness its complete potential (a great community helps in that) and b) being someone who can think of bringing an emerging technology as an integral part of initiating crucial business innovation and c) being someone who can develop a community around that technology to pave the way for the evolution of the technology to solve real-time business problems (which will make that technology thrive and prevent it from being obsolete sooner). At this point, my favorite technology is AIOps and allied cloud-native technologies such as Kubernetes. AIOps is the practice of bringing artificial intelligence into IT operations to help enterprises optimize their IT footprint and to help them simplify the ever-increasing complexities of their infrastructure, services, and applications. AIOps is an evolving field and according to Gartner, its global market share is expected to grow at an annual rate of 43.7% and reach 3.12 billion by 2025. Another crucial report from IDC titled 'Worldwide Future of Digital Infrastructure Predictions' published in 2022 affirms that almost 90% of the Global 2000 CIOs by the end of the year 2026 will employ AIOps solutions to optimize their SDLC processes for cost and performance and key performance metrics. AIOps will also aid them to develop a more resilient and automated business remediation process for improved business resiliency and agility. The increasing adoption of AIOps catalyzes and is almost synchronous with proliferation in the adoption of cloud-native operationalization and maintenance technologies (such as increasing adoption of open source platforms primarily Docker for containerization, and the increase in the adoption of container orchestration tools Kubernetes in particular and in turn the tools for Kubernetes ecosystem monitoring such as Prometheus). Gartner predicts that by the year 2022, more than 75% of global organizations will be running leveraging containerized applications in production & the worldwide container management revenue will surge from $465.8 million in 2020 to reach $944 million in 2024. As AIOps keeps on addressing crucial O&M challenges, it leads to the proliferation of cloud and cloud-native ecosystems to solve the most obvious problems of business operationalization such as distribution, and risk perceptions. 5. What were some of the challenges you faced being a tech writer and how did you overcome them? I've been a writer for over 8 years and one of the challenges I face as a technical journalist is late or last-minute changes to the product or services that need to be addressed in the technical documents. These changes are typically made after I have tried to extract all the relevant information from a subject matter expert. This means that I am often left without a final deadline until the next day when new information becomes available. The lack of time has caused many delays in my work and therefore, for an increase in productivity proactivity is required more than anything else. It's absolutely paramount if one wants results within time frames. At times, I was faced with tight deadlines. The job is not always glamorous. Nonetheless, I saw it as a chance to grow as a professional and improve my skills. Wrapping up a project was not always fun for me because of the time pressures and lack of information about my audience. Working under pressure helped me become more efficient in completing tasks within limited time frames. If you want to make technical writing your profession, you have to know how difficult it will be at times but how rewarding the end result can be. 6. What are you learning/reading currently? Any recommendations for our readers? I am currently training myself on MLOps. MLOps presents the opportunity to learn about Machine Learning, deploying code and software in production. The core concepts are based on the focus on building applications that support the business. This can be easily achieved by learning about the technical aspects of machine learning and how it enhances your existing processes. My advice to readers is technology has several interdisciplinary aspects, such as Big Data, Cloud Computing, and Machine Learning. Try to look at why you need technology in the first place and understand the business use case before you delve deeper into getting a hands-on experience on the core technology and its interdisciplinary "essential complementary technologies." Also, focus on being a part of flourishing open source communities and share your knowledge as much as you can. What is your biggest achievement so far? This question can be answered in multiple ways. To start with the question has both personal & professional significance, and importantly so. I think being a good daughter to my parents is an achievement, and so is being a trustworthy employee. I think my biggest achievement is that I have been able to transform myself and turn into who I wanted to be. My parents have always pushed me to aim high and achieve great heights, this has also helped me become a better person overall. I have always believed that more than seeking a work-life balance, integrating work-life is more essential. Personal accomplishments are important because they have ripple effects on the professional side too. The biggest achievement though remains the ability to impact and influence people's lives positively. If we gave you 10 million dollars to invest in something today, what would you invest in and why? I would love to invest in democratizing technology for a large community. Technology can be a great enabler and create the space for training and sensitizing community members to educate many other people to initiate a technological revolution.  I would also spend it on sensitizing people on why they need it. As we are currently living in the first Information Age (the next phase of evolution), digital learning and education should be a top priority. A digital revolution will empower more people to gain access to knowledge and skills, through high-tech equipment like iPods, laptops, and online resources; it will also allow students to access learning when and where they want it. The benefits of sharing your thoughts and the ability to engage with other community members are the ultimate keys to inspiring a technological revolution. Investing in human resources means that you're in turn creating the space and scope for the trained and sensitize community members to educate many other people. The ability to create more dialogue, encourage more participation and help create a public sphere would be awesome for us all. I would also try to work on ideas to develop an open-source community around my idea wherein a technological renaissance can be initiated and some enterprise prototypes can ultimately be designed and monetized (which would be analogous to monetizing a small portion of value being generated by the community). This would keep the community thriving, evolving, and profitable post the initial investment, and the community will include, indulge and inspire many. 9. What advice would you give to someone just starting in this field? Don't be scared to ask the most difficult questions first and work through questions to figure your way out to the concepts. Always focus on the 360-degree sight of the business landscape before you jump into devising a solution for the business problems. Be "Outcome" focused instead of being "Output" focused. Stay focused on what you are doing and not just what you are trying to achieve. Listen and stick to the most popular and reliable industrial practices but don't forget to invent your own unique hack or style of problem-solving. Train yourself on interdisciplinary aspects of concepts rather than blindly and ardently following one single concept or solution without even fully understanding why. You should always know the answer to – "Why you're doing what you're doing?" Great solution engineers are good at finding multiple solutions for one problem, so it would be great if you try to match those ratios in your selection of lessons. 10. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? There're many but here's one that really changed my life. This in fact is from my higher self to me. Before you can succeed, you have to discover new ways of failing at things, the faster the better. This means that fear and procrastination have to be taken out of the mind. You have to stay highly positive and high-vibe even when you're failing. Keep trying and keep screwing things up miserably unless you figure out the hack to do it correctly. The crux is to do a thing awesomely well, you first have to learn to screw up with it in new ways every time you try; without feeling ashamed, despite all the peer pressure, and despite what the popular public opinion might say. Stay resilient and patient and develop a personal support system around you; a community that may comprise your personal coach, freelancers, coaches, and mentors to get you through the tough times. This can help you when you are feeling stuck in life and find it hard to get over the fear barrier. A reliable community is your actual superpower that inspires audacity and innovation. Meet the Writer: Priya Kumari - Having a Reliable Community is the Actual Superpower 

An important metric for the success of any startup with a token is free float. But can it be increased, for example, to $8 million from scratch just by building a vibrant community for English, Spanish, Turkish, and Chinese-speaking users? This case from BDC Consulting explores that possibility. Call To successfully solve the business problem (growth of free float), the project needed to create a community of users and maintain long-term activity so that they become brand advocates. The main difficulty: a ban on token advertising on behalf of the project. How we dealt with it . This is a trust factor for product users, investors, and media. For example, some tier-1 publications and major bloggers do not accept publications about a project if the community has less than ten thousand subscribers. The community is the core of any crypto project Therefore, we decided to create unofficial communities on behalf of enthusiasts who are interested in the token. To do this, it was necessary to create recognition for the project, and to “prompt” the audience to take the right actions. Step 1: Build Communities The team developed a creative concept. The idea was that information about the token accidentally got into the network, which created the FOMO effect (fear of missing out on profits) and launched a wave of publications from bloggers. Influencers had to encourage subscribers to join the community, which includes the bloggers themselves or their managers. Giveaways to attract first subscribers For the initial promotion to the English-speaking community, we used the mechanics of giveaways. It allows you to get an audience of real people (not bots) in a short time. To keep subscribers engaged, we developed a daily content plan, which included interesting news about the project and market, along with weekly token draws. Part of this audience was interested in the product, and FF grew by 90k tokens. YouTube K.O.L. The first link in our concept was a publication by a top blogger who got a presentation from a closed private sale. He shared exclusive information with his subscribers and highlighted this as a unique opportunity to enter the project at an early stage. To track the impact of one or another stage of our campaign on the growth of organic purchases, we released materials with a difference of 2-3 days. Within 3 days after the publication of the video, purchases of the token increased by $200,000. Twitter Bloggers In the next stage, we launched a series of posts by Twitter bloggers who watched the top influencer’s video, became interested in the project and told their subscribers about it. The tweets gave us another 100k FF boost in project tokens. Turkish and Hispanic Local Communities We proceeded to create a local community in Turkish and Spanish. This time, local YouTube and Telegram bloggers talked about the project and referred to leaked information from a top influencer. They attracted interested users to Telegram chats in their native languages. Chinese Community In China, the WeChat community was originally created. Users were attracted through bloggers, and after filling out the form, the community manager conducted personal interviews. Despite the difficult path, we gathered the most active community of all local ones. In just 12 days, the increase in FF amounted to 1.3 million tokens. Intermediate results: More than 10 thousand subscribers in target geo. Free float over $2 million. x4 growth in the value of the token. Step 2: Develop Communities The community cannot exist without ambassadors who ardently defend the project, answer the questions of newcomers themselves, and share their experiences. Thanks to them: Up-to-date content is available. New subscribers make a faster decision to purchase a project token. After six months of the communities’ existence, we conducted in-depth interviews with the participants, which allowed us to change the strategy: The content plan was redesigned by 70%, in which the main user doubts were covered, and the project was covered from different angles. Changed the mechanics of contests. Began to hold AMA sessions. We launched outreach advertising so that users would contact the project outside the community more often. Issued publications in the media. We translated some materials into local languages. What should be done to maintain activity in communities: Feedback analytics to adjust the content plan. Publications from local bloggers are a sign of interest in the project outside the community. At least 1-2 interesting newsbreaks about the project per month. Results During the year, we have achieved: More than 72 thousand subscribers in all geos. Growth in FF is approaching 8 million tokens. The x12 growth in the value of the token is at its peak. Conclusions and insights Premeditated activity within the community is key to its creation and development. Content plans for new and existing audiences should be different. The community manager should be an enthusiast who finds information about the project in the public domain. Creating a new local community gives a sharp increase in token metrics, and then the dynamics decrease. If the project’s goal is to increase token purchases, then the community should have a constant influx of new audiences. Because the current one has already put the token in its portfolio and can expand it, but only slightly. If you have a loyal, involved community, each new announcement (news about the project, listings, partnerships) leads to a sharp increase in key indicators.

For example, Brave (BAT) launched their popular that emphasizes privacy and an ad-free web experience. Ethereum dApps are another promising tech sector in the space. However, this segment has struggled to capitalize on the huge communities they’ve harvested during the ICO rush. explained this point pretty clearly: James from Loom “If you add up ALL the 100+ active DApps on dapp.review combined, it’s still less than 10,000 users in total who are interacting with an Ethereum DApp on a given day.” “For context and comparison, Facebook has around 1.4 billion DAU, and Twitter 157 million. PUBG Mobile, just one mobile game out of thousands, has 10 million DAU.” The major marketing activity for many of these projects focussed solely on growing vanity metrics to attract speculative ICO investors. For many projects, if you could get an audience of 10,000 Telegram members and create incentives for promoting the project, you were in running to raise millions of dollars off hype. For them, community was a driver of value as a mean to growing a market cap. The ICO market of Q4 2017 was a gold rush, but those days are over. The dApp community has struggled with converting their token investors into users. As I’ve discussed previously, . The majority of projects in this space are still far too complicated for the average person to use. Getting an app up to even 1 million daily active users is a struggle for the average tech company. And for an industry in its infancy, crypto needs to focus on improving upon existing infrastructure to reach a critical mass. the future of the crypto industry will focus on simplicity of use and design With speculation no longer driving the crypto markets, focussing on growing community can’t be the main focus of blockchain startups. Community does not drive value. But technology that looks good, that works, and that works better than what already exists does. The more successful crypto companies in the space need to lead the way by creating value through their tech, and then leverage their community to spread that value outside our crypto bubble. Growing a community to increase market cap has been made irrelevant in the current market conditions. However, successful crypto companies are in the unique position to pave the way for the rest of the industry by building products that are easy to use, look good, and seamlessly integrate blockchain into a user’s daily life.

Community is Not Blockchain’s Driver of Value, but the Tech Is

By Olga Grinina I’ve been involved in the Wild Wild West of ICOs for quite a while now, and I have to confess: most of marketing people in crypto still got no clue about how the industry really works. Respect the crypto mecca Before diving into the dos and don'ts of successful post-industrial PR-strategies, let’s try to figure things out on a broader scale. Why has blockchain suddenly become everybody’s darling? What is happening with global economic processes? Understanding the global socio-economic shift with blockchain and non-financial motivation as its quintessence is the foundation for developing efficient marketing with user engagement at its core. A global paradigm shift to post-industrial business model is bringing the community and user engagement to the front. The customers are to take the most active part in the businesses of new formation, thus changing their role to something way bigger than mere social media following: it is the users who are now together with the CEOs and managers participating in the business operations. That’s why when striving to come up with ideas on how to get a massive user response, the first question one should ask is ‘How do I make them want to get involved and participate in this thing we’re building?’ Understanding the essence of decentralized business model is important too. It is basically all about building ecosystems that give chance to the communities to can bring value at the same time receiving some additional value from the platform itself. Naturally, It is about engagement and interaction for the mutual organic exchange of value with a view to build a loyal strong community around project based on real use/programming cases, related not to hype, but to business and technology. a community-focused strategy is not about promoting a product or a service. This is how you end up with never getting another chance to draw the audience, which is probably for the better. No one was ever going to buy your tokens, anyways. Everyone wants to be exclusive and first-blockchain-platform-leveraging-the-coolest-technology. However, you could probably get more creative than asking prospective investors to join the Whitelist hoping that they immediately feel privileged to get a dubious chance to apply to invest into something no one has ever heard about. How about making a slight effort to engage the audience just for a change? ‘I want Cointelegraph!’, is probably the most frequent request that I’m getting from nitty-witty CEOs. They all lusting it like crazy. But wait a minute, have you guys heard of Alexa rank? Not trying to demolish ‘the most read crypto media in the world’, but really there are tech media with higher rankings! I’m not even talking Techcrunch here. Turn to major Medium publications focused on tech that has been out there for much longer drawing in the enthusiast audience engaged in lively quality discussions. Now we’re talking audience engagement. Tokeneconomy, Consensys, Coinbase blog post, as well as the number of personal blogs are some of my top-favorites here. Trust me, your potential investors, enthusiasts and — most importantly — investment funds and other big players are all hanging out there. Any brand director in ‘so last season fiat industry’ would cry out loud, if he saw you trying to cut the costs on hiring a designer and instead using ‘some basic images just to fill up the space’. Remember, dummy, visuals aligned with your brand strategy are essential. ‘Okay, we’ll make stickers then!’ Now you’re getting there. Remember I bragged about user engagement? How about launching a design contest — let people get creative, trust me the results will outperform your KPIs big time. I came across this one run by an emerging platform Akropolis, with all sorts of those quizzes and riddles. The community engagement on their Telegram got really massive at some point, and I’m pretty sure they’re getting the most out of community-driven strategies in terms of technical implementation of the product as well.Mind the code community quest Here is one of my favorites: ‘‘We’ll fill out the GitHub page later, no one can read that damn code anyway!’ Well, you’re wrong, dummy. Get that code straight and make it pop out. And probably consider hiring CTO who won’t be telling you that the code is ‘private’: he probably doesn’t have it or your ICO is scam — unless that was your initial plan. Gone are the times when one could get away with copy pasting the lines of code or stealing from the rival’s page. And please, please do not announce the ICO start date, until you’re got that ERC-20 up and running. Cause there actually might be some people who would really want to transfer their precious bitcoins to buy your token. Anything goes in PR hustle One thing that everyone chose not to notice, yet it is running under the counter, is bribing. That might sound a bit of a strong word, but that’s what it really is. Media outlets supply the readers with paid PRs here and there, exchanges are allegedly (or in fact) manipulating the asset prices, while expert rating opinions are bought for a certain amount of BTC. ‘I_get approached by blockchain entrepreneur wannabes with innocent requests to review their project on ICO Bench or mention on Cointelegraph. Some of them are rather straight-forward paid offers. What strikes me is that those shady ICOs are not even trying to get the essence of tokenization. Have you guys ever asked yourself why you need to run the business on blockchain? Meanwhile, in ICO projects architecture is essential to design business processes so that the token was attractive for investment and had both potential of its value growth at the external market and potential for its inner value growth when scaling the project. Not so many startups are capable of handling it: more often than not the business itself and the token are on the opposite ends. And honestly, there are cases when in fact the business would be operating so much better without introducing a token at all._ I’d say that a successful ICO is essentially a combination of good product, effective marketing strategy and proper market placement,’ says who is also getting his share of annoying LinkedIn message buzz. I just wanna sell those tokens, man’. Hey, I’m trying to help you here. One last thing: ICO listings. Very important: ‘The more listings we cover, the more people buy the token’. Well, sometimes — or more so, almost every time — quality wins over quantity. Check out a good old Alexa rank for the most visited sites out of that huge list — no one ever gets down further than the first 10 anyways. Dig deeper, think harder One major take away for CMOs scratching their head over ‘that damn ICO’ is this: forget your good old product/market centered strategies, they simply don’t apply here.
